This is such a specialized book, itâs impossible to present it as having universal appeal so Iâll assume whoever is reading this review is interested in the ham radio world specifically as Baofeng structures it. As an introduction, this book is perfect. It starts off explaining some basic terminology and concepts and delivers sharp warnings about the dangers of running afoul of the FCC. Ham radio can be fun but thereâs a real grownup dimension to it and if you donât respect FCC regulations, you can get in a lot of trouble. Next the writer goes into which Baofeng model you should get. You donât want to start with pricey and complicated. You need to start small, cheap and simple. The breakdown of the different models is presented with clarity and perception. In ensuing chapters, everything you need to know about ham and Baofeng is presented with lots of detailâset-up, a first rate exclamation of the different frequencies, antenna installation, programming, troubleshooting and much more. Early on, you might want to jump to chapter 10, âPractical Applications,â where you can learn all the cool things you can do within the ham operator world. That chapter may inspire you to take on a hobby which, to be honest, has a pretty steep learning curve. The book will make that curve a little less daunting.

OK, I am not convinced I need a Baofeng Radio, and have the information I need to make an informed purchase. The book is thorough where it needs to be and easy to understand. Two points for improvement would make it better: a good edit as there are places where it is repetitive and a reference section where it cites to the FAA and other laws by actual statute and code sections and lists other sources.

I always vaguely thought of ham radios as old-fashioned big boxes used by a few amateurs talking on little used frequencies. So, I was interested in this modern update. I found quite the opposite to my stereotype. This book is well-written, well-organized, and full of specific information for using modern compact handheld ham radios for recreational and emergency backup. I particularly liked the sections dealing with the following topics: the most reliable models; battery charging options; emergency channels and frequencies; and practical applications. For anyone not satisfied with the usual receiving modes, this short book is a âmust read.â It certainly has made me aware of the many different options and requirements for purchasing a model and adding this to my home preparation. Highly recommended!

I bought this book because I was having trouble understanding the programming and overall how to use the Baofeng radio I purchased. THIS BOOK IS USELESS! Not one diagram or picture in the entire book. It is like a bunch of sales highlights with a lot of two sentence paragraphs that say what the radio can do but not exactly how to get it done. Very anti-climatic…The few times it attempts to explain steps it never actually tells you how to get the information to enter in the first place. NO EXAMPLES, NO TABLES OF CHANNEL GROUPS, NO PICTURES and NOT RADIO SPECIFIC! I am returning it! GOOD LUCK!
