The Smart Woman’s Guide to Breast Cancer offers a comprehensive functional medicine approach to understanding, treating, and overcoming breast cancer. It covers essential topics including the importance of a whole food plant-based diet, the role of genetics, understanding one’s diagnosis, and the various conventional treatments and their side effects. Dr. Jenn emphasizes the significance of addressing the root causes of cancer, such as chronic inflammation, and guides readers on creating a healing environment through lifestyle changes, diet, and avoiding toxins. The book aims to empower individuals with knowledge and tools for a health-focused recovery and long-term well-being.
Dr. Jenn Simmons is an Integrative Oncologist, Breast Surgeon, Author, Podcast Host, and the founder of PerfeQTion Imaging. Her journey into breast cancer care began with a personal tragedy. At the age of 16, Dr. Jenn’s cousin, acclaimed singer-songwriter Linda Creed, died of metastatic breast cancer just weeks after Whitney Houston’s recording of her iconic song, “The Greatest Love of All,” topped the charts. This loss became a defining moment, inspiring Dr. Jenn to dedicate her life to transforming how we approach breast cancer treatment and prevention.
Dr. Jenn became Philadelphia’s first fellowship-trained breast surgeon and spent 17 years leading the field. However, her perspective changed significantly when she became a patient herself. Through this personal experience, Dr. Jenn saw how broken the conventional medical system can be. This led her to discover and embrace functional medicine, a revelation that sparked her journey towards a more holistic approach to breast cancer care.
This personal journey led her to create Real Health MD in 2019, a practice dedicated to holistic healing for breast cancer. It integrates conventional wisdom with root cause medicine and the drivers of health: nutrition, lifestyle changes, detoxification, and stress management. Dr. Jenn’s innovative approach doesn’t stop there. As the founder of PerfeQTion Imaging, she is establishing safe imaging centers across the nation, armed with revolutionary technology that promises to redefine breast cancer screening. This technology is not only fast and safe but also comfortable, affordable, radiation-free, and boasts 40 times the resolution of MRI. It has received FDA clearance, signaling a new era in breast health and breast cancer screening.
In addition to her clinical practice, Dr. Jenn hosts the “Keeping Abreast” podcast, where she shares her expertise and encourages women to take control of their breast health. Her book, “The Smart Woman’s Guide to Breast Cancer,” challenges conventional wisdom and promotes a holistic approach. It emphasizes the importance of nutrition, lifestyle choices, and addressing environmental toxins, providing practical steps for women seeking to navigate breast cancer treatment and regain control of their health.
Beyond her professional endeavors, Dr. Jenn is a devoted wife, mother, stepmother, grandmother, and athlete. Her life’s mission is deeply personal, rooted in her cousin’s memory, and driven by a desire to make a lasting impact on all those who desire breast health. As she famously says, “Breast Health is Health!”

I bought this book based on the reviews and the author’s interesting academic background. However, after reading the first few chapters, I was quickly let down by the content. I expected this book to be well-referenced but there are only 29 citations, many are cherry-picked and some are just links to buy a supplement. The author made a lot of health claims but failed to provide scientific evidence to back up these claims. For example, she said grains, including whole grains and starchy vegetables are bad. A review of 54 meta-analyses published for whole-grains published in 2020 shows “whole grain intake is associated with lower risk of total and site-specific cancer”. She also suggested what supplements to take before, during and after cancer treatments to reduce the negative effects and this can be very helpful but again no explanations and citations. Why??? There is a lot of ‘you should do this and avoid doing that’ and not enough explanations so I find this extremely biased. There are much better books with more evidence-based advice like ‘Eat to beat disease’ by Dr William Li or ‘Breasts: an owner’s manual’ by Dr Kristi Funk’.

Written by a breast surgeon with a full medical training and a couple of decades in practice who left her surgical consultant job after receiving a devastating diagnosis she went on to train as a functional doctor and oncologist. All the studies she quotes are fully referenced which is something I particularly wanted to read myself. She also has a brilliant podcast call Keeping Abreast With Dr Jenn which is interesting as she has many guest on who were also doctors, oncologists, radiotherapists, thyroid specialists and nutritionists who have all pretty much taken the same route once receiving their own devastating diagnosis knowing in their heart of hearts that some of the conventional treatments they were subsequently advised to take would also be damaging to their health. I feel this book has helped me to make my own informed choices. She doesn’t advise against conventional treatments but informs on voices as well as alternatives. Marvellous!

Every woman needs this book
! I listened to Dr. Simmons in a podcast which prompted me to buy the book. I do not have breast cancer, but I have friends with breast cancer and I wanted to learn more about it so that I can support them. Spoiler alert she is not saying that you absolutely should not do conventional treatments. A lot of the book is spent explaining what all of the diagnostic terms mean and adjunct things that you can do along with conventional treatments if you choose to go that route. If you or someone you know, has been diagnosed with breast cancer get this book!

Informative Read
I bought this book because I heard Dr. Jen on Claudia’s podcast and have always been concerned about breast cancer prevention as I have had so many friends who had it. It’s a fantastic book with up-to-date information from a surgeon who also is very knowledgeable about an integrative approach including what treatments to do, what to do instead of a mammogram, and what to eat.
