This is DC Smith’s third investigation with the Diver and Diver Associates agency. They have been asked by a member of Norfolk’s aristocracy to look into the tragic death of her younger brother, Freddie, the late Lord Thorpe of the title. The inquest verdict was of misadventure, but it isn’t long before Smith begins to suspect there has been a serious miscarriage of justice.

Another very enjoyable book starring the much loved DC Smith. Let us hope that DC carries on for a few more years yet.I have read all the previous DC Smith Investigations and the characters are always excellent. These are book that are difficult to put down and although you want to know the outcome you really do not want the book to come to and end.Well done Peter – keep them coming.

A well-written and well-plotted mystery. The characters are like old friends and make the narrative sweep along effortlessly. Another good read from Peter Grainger.

Like so many others, I love Peter Grainger’s books and have read most of them now. The DC Smith series is my favourite and they really do just get better and better. This one is an absolute belter. I hope we get a bit more of the story included in the next one. Or even a Part Two?!Thanks Peter

The plot is great. The characters live on in the mind when the final page is read and there is something about the pacing and storytelling that makes the DC Smith series an absolute pleasure to read. Thanks again!

Peter Grainger is my favourite author and never fails to impress me. I could not put this book down. All the characters are beautifully drawn, the dialogue wonderful and Norfolk lovingly described. I never read books more than once but I would make an exception with the DC Smith and Kings Lake Investigations series just so I can savor his writing again.

    good reading ahead
The author has in previous books sometimes over-explained and enjoyed his main character more than the reader can. But not very much in this intriguing book, and it is all the better for the restraint.

Another great read in the DC Smith series…
I’m glad DC’s associates are more of a presence in this latest entry in the series. Although his thoughts are always interesting, his humor really comes through when he’s interacting with others. I like how all of the characters have different personalities and we’re getting to know them better. As far as the story line goes, even though he’s not with the police force anymore, this is certainly still a methodical, investigative procedural. Although the “bad” guys are not apprehended at the end, that was not what the intent of the investigation was about — the firm did get the end result that Lady Caroline had hired them for. Perhaps, the investigation will continue with the newly promoted DI Waters in the next “Kings Lake” series.

Another beautifully written book by Peter Grainger.
I have read (and loved) every one of the DC Smith books. The character development, detailed descriptions of investigations by the police and private investigators, and the clever and sometimes unexpected plot lines make these books so enjoyable, and so hard to put down. Although the real culprits in this story weren’t caught (yet), I expect to hear more about that in the next book. Can’t wait.

Wonderful writing, compelling story and characters
I read (or listen to) hundreds of books a year. Peter Grainger tops the list for me. DC Smith is a favorite character for his humanity, wit and compassion – and his skillful ways of dealing with those who are callous, lazy, pretentious or inept. An intriguing story set in Norfolk , with tension but not gore. Good to see the relationship with his partner develop and for members of the new team at the agency begin to establish themselves. I look forward to reading more about them and I hope we will see the King’s Counsel in future episodes of agency or Kings Lake works. As always, I tried to savor and space out my reading, but failed and had an indulgent day of reading on a rainy day. Time I think to re-read all the series from the beginning.

A new DC Smith Investigation is always cause for celebration
I love those days when my Facebook feed delivers a post from Peter Grainger announcing the release of another novel, be it a DC Smith, or a Kings Lake Investigation or a Willows and Lane. This latest DC Smith is another example of his masterful characterization. It’s a great story (no spoilers from me), rich in detail and one I will come back to . . . every time I reread his books I find something new . . . probably because I inhale them as soon as they come out. If you don’t know his books, start with An Accidental Death and work your way through them all . . . you will not be disappointed!

    A Little Disappointing
**POSSIBLE SPOILERS**I generally love all of the D.C. Smith novels. I was a little disappointed in this one because the real villain(s) are not identified, let alone taken to task in any way. Otherwise it was exactly what I enjoy about a police procedural — methodical step-by-step gathering of evidence building to a satisfying conclusion. The methodical part fell a bit short in this D.C. Smith outing because the the murderer(s) are suggested by the mounting evidence but not clearly named. I did enjoy the developing relationships with the Divers and others at that agency.

    Grainger just keeps getting better
I wish I was discovering Peter Grainger for the first time and still had the delight of all his books ahead of me. From the first, his writing gripped me, and it has become more refined and precise with every book. This one is the reader’s equivalent of a beautifully polished jewel in a finely crafted setting. His characters have both depth and restraint and the story itself has fascinating twists that make one rush towards the resolution while not wanting the book to end. This book made reference to several cases in Smith’s past and I can’t quite remember them. Clearly it’s time for me to enjoy a reread of all the Smith and Kingslake books from the beginning. And yes, I have every one.

    DC Smith catches a case
British mystery. DC continues as a private investigator to work another unusual case. Settling in a little more with the agency, with colleagues’ characters gradually becoming richer. Clever, witty and engaging, Grainger writes a tale that keeps me happily occupied for many hours. Serious investigation tale, but DC does make me laugh with his sharpness, and love his relationship development, professionally and at home. The characters are complexed and nuanced, as seen through DC’s sharp eyes, and DC is simply one of the best in British mystery field. Grainger writes good character. In varied ways, the author deftly exposes DCs insights and conclusions, through clues, conversations, highlighting quick expressions, and musings from DCs as he dissects the gathered details. Not a lot of new characters, but new layers added to many. Recommend you read all Grainger’s books, as the background complexities could be distracting, the comings and goings of various bit players confusing, without knowing the full histories. And the histories of the DC’s cases are well written and well worth the time. And follow the author on amazon: each time a book comes out its a complefe surprise and without watning…always worried i will miss one. Ready for the next!
