The Union is gone. Interstellar travel is no longer safe. Enter ex-Union Navy Officer Cliff Rawlins.

More than four years after being wrongfully stripped of his rank and decorations in a court-martial stacked against him, ex-Union Navy Officer Cliff Rawlins suddenly finds himself a free man.

The galaxy to which he returns, however, is changing.

The Union of Free Planets is on the verge of dissolving. Many of the shadowy political players working behind the scenes to end the Union are the same people who sent Cliff away. Yet, in the coming political upheaval, Cliff glimpses an opportunity.

For centuries, people have relied upon the Union Navy to act as the policeman of the shipping lanes. With the end of the Union will come the end of the navy. Interstellar commerce is about to become fraught with danger.

Cliff has a way to use his expertise to provide secure transport across interstellar space. A mercenary navy to defend settled space and get rich doing it. After all, he deserves it for what he went through.

But there are enemies old and new who want him to fail. And this time, they want him dead…

Don’t miss this new military science fiction thrill ride from award-winning author John J. Spearman. It’s perfect for fans of Rick Partlow, Nathan Lowell, and Jeffery H. Haskell!

As the first book in a series this one filled the characters out nicely. The start of the story was an unusual twist but worked well. The ending, without being a spoiler was climactic, leaving you eager for the next book.

Good plot, decent character development, some pacing problems
This was refreshing. No enormous space armadas, no bug eyed monsters or genocidal empires, simply a disintegrating political and economic system that spawns piracy and opportunity. I liked seeing someone confront the downside of a union of star systems breaking up.Dissolving the union dissolved the union navy which protected interstellar commerce, with much piracy and crime resulting. Our main character Rawlins spots the opportunity to build a small space force to fight off pirates. He has to learn on the fly how to build a business while protecting his life.Author includes minor characters that add interest, although one of them, Meredith, needed to butt out of people’s love lives, she likes to intrigue. The pacing is uneven. Story starts with a bang. Former navy captain Rawlins is imprisoned for life on a forced labor planet mining a valuable mineral after a false treason conviction. Finally friends and a persistent reporter manage to get the conviction reversed and Rawlins is released. Then we have a long, rather slow slog with lots of interesting things around building a business from scratch in a brand new opportunity. I found it interesting but I’m a bit of a business geek.Author uses way too many words to convey completely unnecessary details. For example, “His vehicle was not far from the front entrance. He entered the destination into the computer and the vehicle started on the way. DO we need to know this? Better editing could smooth, threading the narrative and background into the story rather than leaving separate blocks of text.Story has some very fast moments, usually conflict with pirates. The last 15% is fast and tight and ends on a near-cliffhanger.Overall good enough that I’ll read book 2.

    WHAT A GREAT READ!
Mr Spearman has delivered yet another must-turn-the-page read, full of adventure, political intrigue, Great Family machinations with an embellishment of Safe For Work romance.Like the prisoner in Chateaux D’If, Cliff Rawlins, a decorated Navy hero, is unfairly and unjustly imprisoned. Rescued from the hell-hole he has spent 4 years in by his former Captain, he turns his fortunes around by wisely foreseeing some outcomes of the impending collapse of the human polity he once served. With the help of others he goes on to found a merchant company … and the rest of the story is yours to discover, including the cliff-hanging ending! As always Mr Spearman’s characters come alive through his mastery of how and what they say to one another; I can’t think of another author who is so adept in this. The viewpoints of the competing characters are fleshed out and have real meaning in the context of their worldview – there’s no mustachio-twirling here! The next book is due out in August – excellent news!

    Swift sure is good
It was a good enough story to keep me reading. At least until I got to the end and found out there was a cliffhanger. Gee, I hate a cliffhanger. The same as a TV show that has a “to be continued”. Yes, I will be buying the next book. I have too, to see if Kelly survived.

    Very good space, military opera
This is not David Weber good at world building or battles. Nor is this Nathan Lowell good at character building. But then very few can compete with those authors. Rawlings’ Redemption is nonetheless well worth reading for its world building, battles and characters.

    Different
I enjoyed this book. It’s arthure used a different approach to science fiction space ship warfare. The story flows well, and character development is great.

    good story
Good story. I don’t like books ending on a cliff hanger. The rest of the book was a good story, by a new author for me. Now to see if book 2 is out, so I can find out what happens

    Good story
Spearman writes well. The characters have depth and are real. Cliff, the MC, a falsely Imprissoned ex navy captain is exonerated, released and begins a new life in a multi planet government whose member planets have decided to leave the federation and divide the navy assets. And, here come the pirates.
