A killer hides deep in the darkness…DI Rob Marshall is stuck in Gartcosh, leading the new Behavioural Sciences Unit – a staff of one and a third – where he’s executing a fruitless hunt, profiling every single murder in Scotland just in case they’re serial cases.

But when a young Peebles woman’s body is discovered in Neidpath Tunnel, disused since the sixties, Marshall is called in to consult on a case on his old home turf. Paired up with his replacement, a cop who’s disinterested in the work, Marshall must tread a line between helping and not jumping to conclusions.

As the scope of the case wides, can Marshall find a killer who may have led many down his path of darkness? Or is Marshall on his own road to destruction?

His Path of Darkness is the sixth book in the DI Rob Marshall series, starring a haunted detective who masks his trauma with biting humour. Perfect for fans of Ian Rankin, Stuart MacBride, JD Kirk and LJ Ross.

Well! What a book!! Another fantastic 5⭐️ book!!!!All the different components exploding out like large firework display, sending Rob, delving into the profiles of a long line of deaths, drawing him to work with Callum Taylor and brushing up against gashkori and straun, and once you think you can get your head around what’s happening.. we’re left hanging for the next bookWhat will Rob do? Will we find what happens when his dad retires? And will gashkori survive the aftermath of his actions? … roll on book 7

    Wife of Gerry

Rob Marshall at his best in this excellent story. After a body is discovered in an old railway tunnel near Peebles, Marshall is tasked with investigating similar scenarios in other areas to check if they are linked. A pretty dark tale of murder and intrigue with ghostly connotations and less than honest police personnel. Rob takes a few batterings along the way but triumphs in the end uncovering the truth. Well worth a read, it’s kept me reading well into stupid o’clock!

DI Rob Marshall is hunting for serial killers, on paper at least. His position at the Behavioural Sciences Unit in Gartcosh is a necessary, if not exciting, evil which he is resigned to doing for the foreseeable future. Until, that is, a body discovered in a disused tunnel in Peebles has him hurrying back to consult with his old colleagues. The detectives of the Borders MIT just want an open and shut case but as Marshall can’t dismiss the links to previous investigations it seems his expertise will be needed even if it’s not welcomed!Where to begin? This is masterful storytelling with a main investigation into a murdered woman, an eye witness who is also an obvious suspect, and a police force determined to solve the case in double quick time, but it is so much more than that. The original concept seems quite straightforward, but the investigation that follows is anything but. With some storylines continuing from previous books and others which will move on into book seven interwoven with Marshall’s case and private life, this moves at a blistering pace and kept the pages turning deep into the night, right to the very end. This is Ed James at his very best.I was able to read an advanced copy of this book thanks to the author and publishers, Grey Dog Books, but the opinions expressed are my own. I absolutely loved this and recommend it highly.

DI Rob Marshall returns to Borders to face off against a serial killer. Dark tunnels and even darker motivations will challenge him, but has he been away from profiling too long to equal the task? Has his time a Gartcosh softened his police instincts? Who will pay the price? Ed James keeps the ride alive with enough twists and turns to keep you guessing.

    Intricate, fast-paced Scottish police procedural
I had been counting the days until the release of the latest in the Rob Marshall series, so I was thrilled when an email arrived on Saturday to tell me this book was available a few days ahead of schedule. Needless to say I spent the rest of the weekend immersed in the complex plot and beautiful Borders scenery. A woman’s body is found in an old, disused railway tunnel near Peebles and DCS Potter asks DI Rob Marshall to check that it is not related to two other recent cases where bodies were found in tunnels. The team in Galashiels quickly identifies a likely suspect, but Rob is not convinced which puts him in direct conflict with his old nemesis, DCI Ryan Gashkori, who has secrets of his own that are threatening to unravel. Fast-paced, an intricate plot and a setting that spans the width of Scotland, this may be my favourite in the series to date. Highly recommend the whole series.
