The Empire’s most formidable stronghold, Zeta Fort, has fallen, shattering the northern defenses. Chaos has been unleased as enemy raiding fleets surge southward into the Empire. Even worse, with eighty thousand warships under his command, Tanaka-lan and his battlefleet stand poised to strike at the heart of the Empire.

The remnants of the Allied fleet have retreated to New Shanghai, bloodied and battered. Emperor James Somerville knows no reinforcements are coming. The countdown has begun—Tanaka-lan’s forces will soon resume their relentless advance. Should New Shanghai fall, the Sol system will be next, and then Humanity’s Empire will follow.

Desperate and out of options, James and his family must prepare for a final, decisive battle against Tanaka-lan. Everything hangs in the balance.

Been reading these from the get go and really love the blerbs before each chapter and really hope to see these continue to the 100 years in the future but I see 2 more books and you have concluded the series I hope there is a spin off with all these future wars and new ships and technologies you can create, but still thank you for making this pretty much my favourite space opera.

This book had me on the edge of my seat fromThe very beginning. The whole series has been enthralling and addictive. The story of James Somerville and the rise of the Earth Empire has been a compelling series that I have had the impatience of waiting for each new book.

This series, almost from the moment I picked it up, I think 2 or 3 years ago has been my favorite. Every time there is a release, I immediately read it and eagerly await the next. There have been persistent issues throughout the series, however, like mixing up character names, inconsistent statistics for the military hardware used, etc. And such things are present in this book as well. To be honest though, I don’t care that those issues are present. D J Holmes has continually done a spectacular job, giving us such a large and complex overarching story. I regularly use this series as the gold standard for how such a large story should be written. This book managed to bring tears to my eyes multiple times while I read it. Only a book that has focused a great deal of effort on developing characters and relationships can have such an emotional impact on their reader. We have followed the majority of these characters for 20 books now and over 20 years of in universe time. There are not very many series that allow such attachment to characters the proper time to grow and evolve. I felt like I could feel the emotion straight off the page.I am devastated to learn that this series will conclude with the 22nd book. There are so many mentions of events to happen after the ending of events in this series. I can only hope that the ending of this series will spark the beginning of another as we hopefully watch the empire evolve into what it is in 3015AD.DJ, if you do not have plans to continue the story of the empire, I beg you to reconsider. This series will always be my favorite. I can’t wait to read the final 2 books.

If you are reading this series in order this novel will break your heart. Holmes’ character development has been excellent throughout and now it haunts. If you are not reading the series in order I would encouragement you to start at the beginning as it is an excellent series.

This book has laid the foundation for an epic finale in the final two books. This has been a thoroughly enjoyable series and I await the next books with mixed emotions. Eager to reach the conclusion but also a bit sad to see it end. I hope the saga of the Empire will continue in some way.

    great series
Enjoyed this series overall, it had a consistent storyline that did not betray established characters, which is something I really appreciate nowadays. Killing characters is ok, but never once did I say, “HEY that character would not behave that way based on past events “ so Cheers

    What a book
What an amazing series this is. Like every other book in this series, this book sucks you in deep into the Karacknid threat, the battles, the sacrifices, and the war. It’s an excellent book and I’m looking forward to the next one. If you’ve read the other 19 books preceding this one, you Will Not be disappointed or dissatisfied. Truly excellent.

    Fantastic!
Without giving away too much of the story I’ll just say that emotions ran very high while reading this book. The tragedy inflicted upon the empire and the characters are heartbreaking as well as heroic. Thank you for a wonderful tale. I’m looking forward to the next episode.

Totally the best series out there!
What a great book! The writers have really kept the series going…and not in a repetitive full way like most series of this genre. It sucks there are only two books left before it ends.

    Amazing Series
It may be a cliche but I had trouble putting down these books. The whole series is well done. I looked forward to when I could find some time to read more of the story. There were no slow points. There were interesting twists every now and then that just added to the whole series. I am anxiously waiting for the next book. I’ve only read one other series with so many books that kept my attention so completely. That would be the Master and Commander series by Patrick O’Brien.

  13. Avatar of Trailblazer

    Trailblazer

Hands down one of the best series out.
I’m just going to say it, if you haven’t read Empire Rising you should. Great story that follows a wonderful, family adventure. It seems like forever that I picked up book one. Considering almost all the original people are gone it feels like a different story. I will be sad to see this series end. Hopefully, we see more of this family because it’s to good to let it just drop. In the latest book, ( Empire’s End ) James seems different and I thought the writers could have done a better job but overall it’s an excellent book. I look forward to seeing #21 in the near future.
