The Call of the Sea series has received more than 16,000 5-star reviews

The Mediterranean Fleet under Lord Collingwood is at its greatest ever – more than a hundred vessels – and is far too small for the tasks demanded of it.

The French have invaded Spain, their former ally, and are ravaging the land in a fashion unseen since the Thirty Years War in the Germanies. The Barbary Corsairs are resurgent, slaving and raiding across the whole Sea. The Two Sicilies, an ally, has collapsed into corrupt desuetude. Turkey is rumbling in the East, and there is a renewed Russian interest in the old aim of achieving access to warm waters from the Black Sea.

Nick Turnhouse in Hawke is being used as a fireman – sent to put out conflagrations as they appear, to perform particular tasks, to respond to needs as they arise. Initially, he is to respond to the pirates of the western shores of Africa with a demonstration of force that will hopefully frighten them into avoiding British interests in the Mediterranean…

A thoroughly enjoyable well written and researched series, absorbing plots and well drawn characters – well done Mr. Wareham. PS Is the brief mention of HBMS Surprise a nod in the direction of Patrick O’Brian?

A pretty much duplicate of prior books by this author, entertaining but just. Standard Wareham fare. Let’s hope anything following will have some originality.

    Not As Interesting
This series has been interesting and entertaining up to this book. Unfortunately, this was somewhat boring. Too much conversation between officers, apparently the author’s means of registering social norms and disruptions of those times. Not much action or interesting characters.Andrew Wareham can do much better, he may be getting tired of this series.

    Surprisingly Brutal
Andrew Wareham has created “Bloody Nick,” and show he’s willing to get blood on his main character. But until now there has always been a bit of a remove. This volume of the series loses that remove. For whatever reason, Wareham has removed some of the filter from our eyes. The brutality is a bit more brutal, the luck a bit worse, the gifted horses a bit more Trojan. I don’t know if the author was just having a bad week of reading the news, or if there is some ulterior motive to changing the course of the series. But readers who have been happily bumbling along may find themselves still satisfied with the story, but it’s a different satisfaction – spicy Thai food instead of a pot roast, or something.Otherwise, it’s more of the same. Wareham follows the time-honored practice of participating in history without impacting it. So naturally nothing his characters do can be allowed to matter. Still a fun read, though.

    Entertaining, fast paced, captivating
Having completed twelve books in about 13 days, the experience has been like watching a mini series. Totally enjoyable. I would wish for maps and some descriptions or diagrams of the ships and sail rigging. I would recommend this series to anyone who enjoys military fiction.

    No Pleasantries Here.
Th English, French, and Spanish combatants have run amuck in this phase of history. The policy of Scourched Earth is rampant. All sides seem determined to destroy each other. It’s a depressing story with a few examples of human compassion.

    A Satisfying Installment
Another satisfying installment of the series, with plenty of action and historical context. Mr Wareham’s lively style never fails to deliver an interesting and entertaining story.
