Teen Titans, Who?
I didn’t read comic books as a kid, or watch much television. The options were there, but full length books were so much more engaging. As a result, I had no idea who the Teen Titans were when I saw this movie – and I wasn’t particularly fond of the Super-Hero Genre. Now I’m a fan.The folks who did this movie did a fantastic job – my major regret is that it wasn’t longer (maybe even a trilogy!). I’ve watched it multiple times and enjoyed it every time.Given the limited time constraints they were working in, they were able to do quite a bit of character development. The villains were smart and evil and worthy opponents. A lot of interesting stuff from a psychology perspective. All things I didn’t expect to find in the Super-Hero Genre – and I’ve been dragged off to see quite a few of the movies over the years so I thought I knew what to expect from any such movie. I was wrong.I also looked at JL vs Teen Titans. It had similar good qualities.Hopefully there will be a lot more Teen Titan movies coming that are just as well done as this one.

Awesome cartoon movie seen it once with commercials and now I don’t have to be interrupted anymore while watching the movie.

Concise positive summation of a long complicated story
The Judas Contract is the only Teen Titans trade/ graphic novel that I own. This movie is a more positive and concise adaptation of that novel. Without giving away too much of the plot, Terra Markov isn’t the complete villain I remember in the trade. She’s a child struggling with past trauma, duty to her team mates, and naive loyalty to her guardian/ would be lover Deathstroke (Slade Wilson). I characterize this movie as tragedy- Markov starts out as damaged, fragile, and bitter only to be betrayed by the one she trusted most. Her fate here is sad but not unpredictable as the story proceeds. Characters are killed in this film, that said: this is NOT a movie for young children in my opinion. It’s too dark especially for Teen Titans animation. The reason I say it’s a more positive portrayal of Terra is because she doesn’t try to personally kill the Teen Titans even after she and Slade capture them as I think she did in the trade, also her sexual relationship with a much older Slade Wilson is untried. The trade starts out with them talking after a ‘hook up’. For what it’s worth, Terra looked a bit older in the comics, maybe 16, while in this movie… not so much. Nevertheless, that part was uncomfortable for me in both the movie and the trade.I loved how the movie starts out with some characters from Young Justice: Speedy, Bumble Bee, Kid Flash, and Robin, it seemed like the voices were the same but I’m not sure. Later, we see Blue Beetle: Jaime Reyes as well. I thought the voice acting was terrific! I loved the dynamic between Kori and Dick over team leadership, wished Wonder Girl had a bigger part like she did in the trade but that’s okay. I loved Beast Boy’s summation of a hero: that pain or loss creates pressure that either forms a diamond or grinds you into dust. He chose to characterize Terra as hero, I respect that, don’t agree but it was noble of him to say that. Also, loved seeing Jericho- Joseph Wilson, Slade’s son even though he didn’t speak. He’s in the movie for 1 scene then in the post credit scene.I ended up giving this movie 4 out of 5 stars because it was a tad oversimplified considering it’s source material but it does continue in the events from previous DC animated movies: if you haven’t read The Judas Contract, it shouldn’t take away from this movie. But if you have read the trade; it’s the same basic story but several details backgrounds of the characters are very different or omitted entirely.

Good storyline and all the action.
This movie is great because of two things:1) Good storyline.2) Action packed.Warning: there is a lot of killing in it so I donât recommend it for the kiddos. This could easily be rated R for graphic violence.

DC is back on track.
I’ve been a little critical of DC’s animated shows as of late. There just seemed to be something missing, and I couldn’t quite put my finger on it till just now. In previous movies I’ve reviewed the missing ingredient was heart. Heart and soul and this brings it all back! Let me say before I get to far along, this really isn’t a story for young kids without an adult present, a minimum of a PG on this sucker. Alright now that the parental advisory is out of the way, let me begin.Alright lets start with the packaging, nice, cool action figure, all that’s fine and dandy, but the real good are in the show itself. If you’ve never read the Judas Contract or seen the TV Teen Titans’ show do it’s version of it back in the day then you’re going to have a nice ride. In the earlier DC movies what they were doing was retelling in animation some of the greatest DC stories they’ve ever had, and they do that here with a little twist. Ever since the Flashpoint movie (excellent by the way, if you haven’t seen it you should) DC animated has all but created there own little animated movie universe. There are some random movies that don’t fit into their current continuity and that’s excellent to. Return of the Caped Crusader was just that (if you love the campy 1960s Batman as much as I do you will adore that movie!) an off shoot. This movie takes place in the continuity they’ve created with and retold a gem form classic Teen Titans lore with a new, more mature cast of characters. There are some adult themes but that are played for compelling story and comic effect. This show doesn’t hold your hand or treat you like you don’t know what’s really going on. In some respects the movie plays out exactly as you think it will, in other ways it will likely surprise you if you have no idea what the story is originally about. That being said, no spoiler’s here, this is too good to spoil. Pick this up and tell DC to keep making ’em with heart. From my perspective I think DC animation is back on top and hopefully it will be staying there a long, long time. Thanks for reading and have a nice day!
