“Narrator Daniel Henning brings his signature versatility, emotional connection, and perfect comedic timing to the latest in the acclaimed Cerulean Chronicles series.”—AudioFile (Earphones Award Winner)

“… with characters like the ones in The House in the Cerulean Sea, you can’t help but wish you belonged to such a wonderful, magical family. And the dialogue! You will not be able to drive while listening to it because you’ll be laughing way too hard!”—Buzzfeed on The House in the Cerulean Sea

Somewhere Beyond the Sea is the hugely anticipated sequel to TJ Klune’s The House in the Cerulean Sea, one of the best-loved and best-selling fantasy novels of the past decade.

A magical house. A secret past. A summons that could change everything.

Arthur Parnassus lives a good life, built on the ashes of a bad one. He’s the headmaster of a strange orphanage on a distant and peculiar island, and he hopes to soon be the adoptive father to the six magical and so-called dangerous children who live there.

Arthur works hard and loves with his whole heart so none of the children ever feel the neglect and pain that he once felt as an orphan on that very same island so long ago. And he is not alone: joining him is the love of his life, Linus Baker, a former caseworker in the Department in Charge of Magical Youth; Zoe Chapelwhite, the island’s sprite; and her girlfriend, Mayor Helen Webb. Together, they will do anything to protect the children.

But when Arthur is summoned to make a public statement about his dark past, he finds himself at the helm of a fight for the future that his family, and all magical people, deserve.

And when a new magical child hopes to join them on their island home—one who finds power in calling himself monster, a name Arthur worked so hard to protect his children from—Arthur knows they’re at a breaking point: their family will either grow stronger than ever or fall apart.

Welcome back to Marsyas Island. This is Arthur’s story.

Somewhere Beyond the Sea is a story of resistance, lovingly told, about the daunting experience of fighting for the life you want to live and doing the work to keep it.

Most Anticipated from Goodreads, Paste, Polygon, BookBub, and more.

A Macmillan Audio production from Tor Books.

T J Klune is a master of stories. And I’ve been waiting for this book since finishing The House By Cerulean Sea. Waiting and dreading, because how could it get any better than that?! How can there be a continuation that can be just as great? But it was. It was worth the wait. To see the amazing characters and feel all the amazing emotions. It is warm, it is sad, it is furious, human, but above all that it is bright and warm as Arthur Parnassus’ fire. Thank you for the amazing, amazing story. Thank you for taking your time to share it with us. Truly – thank you!

If I could give this book a million stars I would. From the very first words, Somewhere Beyond the Sea suckered me in just like House in the Cerulean Sea.Chapter one bought out all the emotions from laughing out loud to crying due to his beautiful the children are. And it didn’t stop there. The emotional roller coaster kept coming.Starting to read the book gave me the feeling of coming home after a long holiday and seeing the family – the warmth you feel on Marsyas Island is beyond imagination. I didn’t realise how much I had missed all the characters it was nice to catch up with them (and meet a few new ones too). This book continues on from House In The Cerulean Sea perfectly. Also any book where u find someone I dislike more than Umbridge is a win for me!TJ Klune you are a master piece and I want to thank you for the beautiful people and worlds you have created.

To say that I thoroughly enjoyed the book, is an understatement. I am an adopted child who was lucky enough to find love in a wonderful Italian family, with three siblings who welcomed me with open arms. I recognised the dynamics and the beauty of having parents with a kind and open and above all tolerant heart. It changes one forever. This book is for absolutely everyone who open and tolerant and loves the world because of its diversity and because after all, we are all humans.

You are either a lover of T. J. Klune’s writing or you simply tried it and dismissed it! Obviously I am the former. This writer’s imagination knows no bounds; his ability to construct a fantasy world is monumental. There are many authors whose command of the English language is superb and yet their ability to construct an enjoyable story is lacking and in contrast there are those who can imagine a wonderful scenario but are sadly lacking in the art of depicting relationships. T. J. Klune should be held as an example of a real story teller. I can’t wait to read his next masterpiece.

Absolutely loved every word. As much as I loved the first book, I think this one is even better. The end was unexpected and perfect

Read “House in the Cerulean Sea” first
I was under the weather for a few days, and this book was the perfect pick-me-up.It begins not long after the end of “The House in the Cerulean Sea” (delightful, read it first) with the chief focus on Arthur Parnassus, the last phoenix in the world and, in his human form, master of an orphanage for magical children. The book is about overcoming prejudice, about the importance of making a family through love, about how unfeeling a bureacracy can be that claims to want to protect the weak but gets caught up in its own power, and especially about nurturing children. It’s a sweet, heart-warming story, which avoids becoming overly sweet because of the children. They are rambunctious, imaginative, often very funny, often very mischievous (a problem given that they are also powerful magical beings). The six from the first book are all back, plus a new one, a young yeti who enjoys putting on one-man shows of noir drama and who loves to scare people who want to be scared. The setting is vaguely Britain in the late 20th century. Prices are in pounds, there’s a prime minister, people go on holiday trips on the train. There are no cell phones — satellite phones are just coming in — and gay marriage has recently become legal. But then at no time did real Britain have children born as garden gnomes or woods sprites or terrestial jellyfish (their loss). The bad guys are a bit cardboard, and conversations often go on a bit too long, as Klune himself acknowledges. But who cares! It’s all fun. The story wraps up well but certainly suggests a sequel in the making — looking forward to it!

    Perfect. Heartwarming. Kind.
I want to live in this world. The characters are so fully realized and warm and the story is expertly crafted to bring light and joy through every word. Chauncey Hive Rise Up.

A beautifully, funny, profound masterpiece wrapped in a tale of love, family and acceptance
Oh my goodness. This book. Is. Everything. It is a wonderful sequel to The House in the Cerulean Sea and w phenomenal book all on its own. Expect to feel all the things – expect to laugh, to swoon, to bite your nails, to roll your eyes, to be verklempt, and to cry. I wish there was a way to give a book more than 5 stars. If so, this book would deserve all the stars. All the stars. It is most importantly a story of a man who finds his family and his path but interwoven with this wonderful tale is an equally profound and beautiful philosophy about bigotry, love, differences, joy and acceptance. This book is about a home for extraordinary, unique, magical, quirky, and lovable orphans and the two adults who love and care for them and what happens when the world tries to squish them and destroy their found family. TJ Klune is a master storyteller who has perfected the art of writing stories whose meaning and emotions stay with you long after you read the last word and whose main characters include beautiful three dimensional, imperfect, non-hetero messy humans with such depth and so much heart that you want them to be your best friends. I will now be carrying Arthur, Linus, Zoe, Lucy, Chauncey, Sal, Theodore, Phee, Talia, and David in my heart every day because how could I not. And I’m with the author ”take their fear away. Take their anger. Take their hatred, their bigotry, and remake the world as it should be.” “We will remake this world into one it should have been: welcome to all.”

Fun but repetitive of book one, with flat characters for bad guys
Somewhere Beyond the Sea is more focused on Arthur (where book one was focused on Linus), and is goofy fun. However, the plot setup is too similar to book one. Futher, the motivations of the bad guys are not well developed–they’re just evil in a cartoony sort of way. I enjoyed it, but it’s not as good as book one.

    Another Masterpiece
TJ Klune did it again! Another gripping story with a plethora of beautiful messages. This book made me laugh, cry tears of anger and sadness, and cry tears of pure joy. I literally could not put this book down, I stayed up until 4 in the morning just to finish it. The perfect sequel, fans will not be disappointed!

The road ahead will not be smooth. No matter what I—we say, there will always be those who refuse to accept the truth. A feedback loop that never ends.”“But I believe the greatest weapon we have at our disposal is our voices. And I am going to use my voice for you, and for me. Hate is loud. We are louder.”“That’s the funny thing about those in power. They underestimate everyone beneath them, even knowing their secrets are heard by someone.”“You have to trust me. Trust us. We may be kids, but we’re your kids, Dad. You made us all believe we could do anything. Now you have to trust us to do that.”“Hope is the thing with feathers, yes, and hope is the thing with fire.”𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄:This story, at its heart, is a love letter to the trans community. Yes, it’s a continuation from 𝙏𝙝𝙚 𝙃𝙤𝙪𝙨𝙚 𝙞𝙣 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝘾𝙚𝙧𝙪𝙡𝙚𝙖𝙣 𝙎𝙚𝙖, but there’s a beautiful and powerful message embedded in every single page. TJ Klune has something to say about the hate he sees towards transgender peoples, and he is shouting at the people in the back. It’s like a dream returning to Marsyas Island; these characters have felt like family to me and I loved getting to visit the inhabitants once again! There’s a magical child that has been in hiding, and Arthur and Linus want to be David’s forever home. But David has had a very difficult life and trust will not come easy.Besides working on making David feel safe and integrating him into their family, the adults on Marsyas Island also have to contend with the new director of DICOMY. Jeanine Rowder has made it her mission to ruin Arthur’s reputation as well as remove the children from his and Linus‘s care. Miss Rowder immediately appoints a new case manager to report the goings on on the island in the hopes it will be Arthur’s undoing. With all these adults going around, making decisions, they forgot to ask the people who this would impact the most, they forgot to remember that there are seven individuals who want to have a say in their life-the children. And the children are tired of being left out of the conversation. The children are going to take matters into their own hands and speak in voice so loud, they will no longer be ignored. This book made me laugh, this book made me cry, and this book paints such a clear picture of where we are failing our children and where we need to start listening. Hate is not inherent, it is learned, and the adults in the room need to start doing a heck of a lot better if we want to see a world that is inclusive and accepting of all.Daniel Henning is an incredible narrator, giving each and every child their own voice, identifying each, and every adult in the story. If you listen to the audiobook, there are some fun surprises with how the story is told. Definitely a must listen! TJ Klune also narrates the introduction and the acknowledgments and his voice is incredibly powerful.
