He’s a heartbreaker with a scorecard.
She’s his dirty secret.
No need to ask…he is A Smooth Operator!

I’m Remi Drake, the king of Memphis nightlife. At under thirty, I own the hottest spots in town, and believe me, I enjoy every perk that comes with it.

Echo is my sister’s friend—she used to be the designated ugly fat friend (DUFF) in high school. Now, she’s a cancer researcher with a PhD. She’s no longer fat but curvy and sexy; and then there’s that amazing brain of hers. Plus, she’s always had a thing for me.

One night, things get out of hand and I pitch the idea of an acquaintance-with-benefits relationship: no strings, no promises, and most importantly, no one can ever know. Just fun. Perfect, right? Except it isn’t. Jealousy and old feelings twist our no-strings-fling into something complicated.

When Echo overhears me say terrible things about her in front of my friends, she decides she’s had enough of my bullshit. By the time I figure out that Echo is the one for me, it’s too late. I’ve already lost her

I absolutely love Maya Alden’s books and this one was no exception.Remi and his family are tough to love (except maybe his father), but I love a good redemption arc and Remi redeems himself. The change that their relationship ignited in Remi, his sister and in Echo was beautiful. That Echo finally gained a support group made the betrayal from Remi almost worth it.It was a perfect story with betrayal, grovel, heartbreak, social status differences and a whole lot of love. The message that real love can overcome every issue and hurdle was beautifully portrayed without being to cliché.I was hyped up through teasers and literally couldn’t wait, so I’ve read it in one go right on publish date and wasn’t disappointed. Often books cannot deliver what they promise, but this book (and all other books I’ve read from Maya) did even exceed my expectations.I absolutely recommend this book, if you are interested in lots of grovel, no cheating, heroine is brilliant and works in STEM and a happy ever after.

Maya Alden does it again! You will adore and admire Echo more and more with every chapter!! She’s too good for everyone around her and as always, she finally see it while having the man of her dreams at her pretty feet, begging her to let him show her that he can be worthy of her whatever it takes and he really does,he wasn’t all bad and she still made a better man of him. Echo is so good that she inspires change in all the ‘bad’ people around her until they are finally able to be good and happy people themselves. Maya Alden isn’t a mere author she is a story teller of the highest order who NEVER disappoints and once again,I can’t praise her work enough 👏🏻

The book is one of the awaited collections of maya, I adore her books and her language, which acts like a soothing balm. The emotions are always a roller coaster ride in her books, and this book with remi and echo an ideal relationship is portrayed. Hope to read more books.

It was ok…The heroine just made it easy and the grovel was barely there.I’m finding myself wishing for the heroine to end up with a better hero because ethe way they try to fix things is just not enough 🙄

Remi was definitely a mmc with bad qualities. He was vapid. An elitist. A snob. Rude. Childish. Not many redeeming qualities if I can be honest.I swore if he almost called her Poopy Pants one more time, I was going to dnf this book.Maya writes mmc who mess up. A lot. And they grovel. They basically spend half the book grovelling. And they do grovel well. I love that she didn’t forgive him after 5 minutes. It was months and months. Still, some things I didn’t like about the book to give it a full 5 star rating.I especially didn’t like at the end where he said he tried to have sex with other woman but he only wanted her. Could have done without that line for sure.Otherwise my sadistic heart that loves mmc who messes up and need to grovel has been sated.

    I almost quit reading
This book has so much angst and I hated the male character. I didn’t think there was anyway he could be redeemed. The way the heroine was treated by everyone was hard to read and hard to watch her stay with this group. Why I almost quit reading. I’m very happy I stayed with it. Maya did an amazing job of realistically turning it around. Highly recommend.

    Hits right in the feels
He is a big jerk and he proves it over and over again. She is super sweet and smart. She isn’t the doormat that everyone thinks she is. He is shallow and judgmental. They shouldn’t work but they do. I read this in one sitting. I couldn’t put it down. Love it!!!

A great book with plenty of grovel
I so wanted to hate Remi. The way he and his friends treated Echo was appalling. I was upset with her at times for just taking it and do wish she stood up for herself sooner. The things he said about her should not be said about another human being let alone someone you love. That being said, I think he did grow and was legitimately sorry for the way he had treated her and loves her. I loved the way he stuck around and showed her that he was there for the long haul.I wish that we could have seen the Thanksgiving dinner. That seemed like a pivotal moment in their relationship, as he finally brought her home to mom.I did not like Sierra and she was physically abusive. I kind of wished that Dallas had left her. I can get over a lot in a relationship, but learning they were an abusive racist is one that I would struggle with greatly and possibly never get past. I loved that Lani grew. I wish we could have seen Marina’s reaction to seeing Remi and Echo. This was actually one of my favorites and Maya Alden has for sure moved to the top of my list of must read authors! She is one of my favorites!

    Great book
I enjoyed this book a lot. My only issue was the nickname for the main character. These people were in their 20s and still calling her a ridiculous name from high school. I get that they didn’t grow up bit it detracted from the story to me. I wish they had some other awful name to call her.

    great quick read
This book is a heartwarming romance novel that explores love and destiny through the lives of two different characters. Their journey, filled with emotional highs and lows, is engaging and relatable. The story, while familiar, is beautifully written and offers a satisfying escape into a world of love and connection. Perfect for a quick, feel-good read.

    It was somewhat good
Don’t get me wrong it was good but I felt parts were skipped. Like the thanksgiving dinner. What happened there? Then all of a sudden a year later & the bonus epilogue was short & not that great. This is MY personal opinion about it.

Worth the read – but a few problems
This was a good story but the FMC needed to have a bigger “a-ha” moment. We suffer through all of the hurtful, crushing negative behavior and horrible words (the high school insult was ridiculous and hard-to-believe still being used it was so juvenile) and don’t really get a big enough payoff of the FMC having her say. The story was good and the main characters believable. I just would have liked a stronger statement from the FMC to those who denigrated her so completely.

Michelin star perfection of a book
Where to start? I really craved being delighted by a book and this delivered!Echo, MFC, was so real. She was a product of her upbringing and circumstances. She was also the great woman she grew herself into. Absolutely liked her.Bonus: well educated self supporting brilliant scientist (not a bakery in sight)Remi, MMC, was also a product of his upbringing as well as believably the man he was growing into. This book brought the anticipation and the angst and the grovel was believable because of all the great seeds sown into the delightful story.I won’t say more because I enjoyed every minute of the ride and think other readers should too. This book should delight anyone who enjoys the overheard, unrequited, betrayal, and grovel trope especially if you enjoy well rounded nuanced characters in an engaging story.I didn’t want it to end and will definitely reread. This is a gushy review because I just finished reading this and want the delightful feeling to come through. This book has the It. The thing that delights and brings the feelings and experience so you don’t get pulled out and stuck in overthinking. Just enjoy.
