It was supposed to be a straightforward protection job. Remove the target from Vermont, get him to the safehouse, keep him there until his mafia uncle testifies, get back in my employer’s good graces.

Boom, done. Easy.

But it turns out things get complicated real fast when your target is an adorkable, accident-prone cutie with a shockingly low sense of self-preservation, zero clue that he’s related to the Fromadgio crime boss, and 100% too much inclination to chat happily with strangers.

When Chris compromises our safehouse (and accidentally starts a “lowkey, unavoidable” bar fight), our only option is to go undercover… pretending to be campground hosts in Copper County, New York.

Make that married campground hosts. (Long story.)

Now I’m hiding out with a guy who’s obsessed with action-adventure shows and hand-knit sweaters, and whose most fearsome talent is arranging charcuterie boards, all of which is far less helpful in a gunfight than you might think.

And worst of all… the sweet little virgin I rescued is growing on me.

Somehow I find myself listening to his happy chatter when I should be watching the woods, trying to figure out how his mind works when I should be getting us out of this predicament, and appreciating the way he looks in my shirts when I should be focused on getting my career back on track.

But when the Fromadgios’ enemies finally find us, protecting Chris is no longer just a job. I’ll do anything to protect what’s mine… and there’s nothing pretend about it.

May Archer is a must read for me. This is another story where I was laughing uncontrollably at times yet still combining romance and suspense. Chris is absolutely adorable and hilarious. Reed is hard on the outside but really a sweetheart. Fantastic read!

    Amazing Feel Good Story!
May Archer did a phenomenal job with this. I’ve loved her books for years and this one had me hooked as soon as I started listening to it. I’ve been waiting for Reed Sunday’s story since the end of the last series, which is kind of where we start this book. In Little Pippin Hollow we meet Chris, sweet, shy and a little naive. He ends up in a car with Reed after some miscommunication, OK alot of miscommunication, for an unlikey adventure. Reed is actually there to protect Chris and he has no idea. After several mishaps they end up in Copper County as “newlyweds”! That’s their cover story. But of course, it ends up being so much more. Chris is awkward, clumsy and his ranting is hilarious. Reed is grumpy and is trying very hard to stay professional with his cute protectee. This book had me smilling and brought back characters from O’leary which I absolutely loved! The story is funny and heartwarming! I absolutely adored this and of course I cannot wait for the next story! I listened to the audiobook and of course, Michael Dean did an absolutely amazing job as usual.

Grumpy, awkward, adorable, ALLLL the feels!!!
First, I don’t believe you need to have read Archer’s other previous series to read this. Be prepared to want to once you’re done with Chris and Reed’s story!Their meet-cute is adorably awkward and it just keeps going from that point on. I laughed multiple times and am still laughing at the wit of the characters. Their story is low angst which is a big draw for me. Reed is a total grump and just wants to do his job. Chris is a mass of utter confusion and wants to be the center of someone’s world. And, he is simply adorable and you will want to be his best friend by the end of the book.I highly recommend the Sunday Brother series, Reed’s brothers, after this book. You get a taste for more in a little conversation that will have you laughing. May Archer has an incredible sense of humor that she is able to intertwine with an intense love story that pulls at your heart. She also has a talent for interweaving additional plot lines such as the synopsis of Chris’s need for protection in this story that makes you keep turning pages and wondering what will happen next. Never a dull moment in her books! Highly recommend and will re-read!

    Adorkable
A case of a mistaken kidnapping leads to the most adorkable non-victim ever falling in love with his non-captor/protector and vice versa! Laugh-out-loud funny and truly unforgettable characters in this first book of a new series.

I didn’t want it to end.
The Pretenders of Copper County is an excellent continuation of the Copper County series (there is a prequel for this series). The storyline is well done and the secondary characters keep things moving along while Reed and Chris do their thing.I enjoyed all of these characters, but Chris…Chris is everything to me in this book. I don’t think I’ve ever read a more endearing man. He is all that is sweet and naïve, trusting and giving. I won’t get more into his personality and the whys and wherefores of it because…spoilers, but I want everyone to know I loved this man from his first scene until the end of the book. I wanted many times to reach into the pages and hug him, nudge him, and cheer for him. Just thinking about him gives me a warm feeling inside. He feels like a friend I didn’t know I needed in my life.Reed is exactly what Chris needs, as is Chris for Reed. I enjoyed watching Reed change his outlook on aspects of his life that he had thought were more or less written in stone. I love to see a strong character continue to grow. He is everything I wanted and needed him to be.These two together kept a smile on my face, and so many times I was laughing out loud at the things Chris said and did. I wish I could see the look on Reed’s face during some of those scenes. I bet it would be priceless. They end up with a strong emotional connection and chemistry that makes their HEA both believable and satisfying.I look forward to more from this author.

Fun and heartwarming, opposites attract, fake husbands romance!
“What I’d thought was my first date was actually an abduction.”The Pretenders of Copper County takes us from Little Pippin Hollow and back to O’Leary. Chris Winowski is just going about his day when a ridiculously hot Sunday brother pulls up beside him and asks him to get into his car. Excited to finally be asked on a date, Chris gets in, only to find out that Reed is an agent assigned to protect him. Even though Chris is so sure Reed is wrong and he doesn’t need to be protected, he trusts the man and goes with him on an adventure that changes both their lives forever.”You can let people get to know the real Reed Sunday. Knit your own identity so you know it’ll fit.”For all their differences and initial misunderstandings, Reed and Chris brought out the best in each other. Since Reed became a protective agent, he’s drifted apart from the family he loves. His life has become so singularly about his job that he’s forgotten who he is as a person. But Chris reminds him of all the lost and hidden parts of himself and helps him find joy in a life outside of his work. And Chris has been sheltered all his life. But with Reed, he’s able to spread his wings and fly knowing that their’s always going to be someone to catch him and support him in anything he does. They may be pretending to be a couple, but the feelings they share are so real and you can just feel that love shine when they’re around each other.”The idea that this man— this lumberjack, this Sunday— had been waiting for me had dumped my brain into a blender and hit the smoothie button. I could barely make my mouth form words.”This book made me laugh so much. My face hurts from how hard I was smiling as I read this book. Even when they were in life-threatening danger, they managed to make me laugh and swoon at their adorableness. Their constant bantering/arguments was one of my favorite parts of this book. Chris and Reed are opposites in every way and from the moment they met, they clashed about everything. While Chris may be endearing and agreeable with everyone else, he’s not afraid to put his foot down and contradict Reed when it comes down to it. Especially when he’s so sure that Reed has the wrong guy and he doesn’t need to be protected. And for someone who’s so stoic and professional, Reed can’t help but succumb to the softness of Chris’s doe eyes and his outlook on life. His need to protect Chris quickly turns personal and he’s willing to do anything to make sure no one harms a single hair in his head. Together, these two take us on a hilarious adventure that kept me entertained from start to finish.”Errant thoughts of a future with Reed tried to sneak their way into my head and heart, but I forced them out. There was no room for reality in this fantasy.”From shootouts in a bird themed house to starting low-key bar brawls, Reed and Chris leave their mark in every place they stay until they finally land in picturesque Copper County. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, May Archer has a gift for writing small towns. Whether it’s an island in Florida or a town named after a butterfly, you always get a setting and characters that give you the warm fuzzies and welcome you with open arms. Even grumpy Reed couldn’t resist the charm of Copper County and along with Chris, he builds a pretend life for himself that feels all to real by the end of their “fake relationship.” It’s no wonder that these two decide to put down roots there after all.”I couldn’t think of any pretend life more exciting than my own— being Christoforo Winowski (sometimes Sunday), a man who got to build his future in beautiful, tiny Copper County with the love of his life.”I loved revisiting my old favorite characters from O’Leary. It made me smile every time one of them made an appearance. It might be time for a reread before the next book comes out. I have my fingers crossed that it’s going to be Watt Bartlett and a certain Wrigley heir. But before we move on to their story, I just want to say that I adored everything about this grumpy/sunshine, fake relationship, bodyguard romance. This fun, heartwarming romance was the perfect start to a new small town series and I can’t wait to see where it’ll take us next!
