How did a shaky startup defy expectations and become the world’s leading spaceflight company? Get the untold story of the team of game-changers, led by a well-known billionaire, who are sending NASA astronauts to space—and just might carry the human race to Mars.

One company dominates the modern space industry: SpaceX, founded by controversial entrepreneur Elon Musk in 2002, now sending more payloads into orbit than the rest of the world combined. But Musk didn’t do it alone—the saga of SpaceX is the story of a diverse cadre of true believers in the limitless potential of space travel.

For the first time, Reentry relates the definitive chronicle of how this daring team was able to redefine what it takes to reach the stars.

With Pulitzer Prize–nominated journalist Eric Berger, author of Liftoff, as your guide, you’ll accompany SpaceX’s innovative thinkers during their toughest trials and most audacious moments, including:
Creating the first orbital rockets that land by themselves and fly againTransporting a 120-foot rocket from Texas to FloridaRecovering from a “Hell’s Bells” accident before the first Falcon Heavy launchFrantically searching the ocean for the first rocket that splashed down intactIdentifying the $20 part that led to a rocket exploding in flightSlicing up an engine days before it launched into space
From launchpad explosions to a pernicious cricket infestation to the demanding management style of Musk himself, the rise of SpaceX was beset with challenges and far from inevitable. Find out how the startup beat the odds and flew high enough to outpace their rivals . . . and where they’re going next.

  1. Amazon Kunde

Very disappointong, just bravado, no technical back gound is given how the development decisions were made. Lots of chit chat dialogue.

  2. Van N.

Ok read until author injected flawed Musk assertion
This book continued where Liftoff left off with more heroic tales in achieving the seemingly impossible: orbital rocket landing on land then at sea, Falcon Heavy and first commercial human spaceflight and other side tales. It was an ok read but I had to stop, which was at 91% read on my Kindle anyhow, and deleted it when the author opine that if there was anyone or entity that would stop SpaceX from reaching Mars it would be government regulations in the form of FAA, or so I thought. No! According to the author “there is exactly one person who can stop the steamroller, and that is the same person who set it into motion” with Musk’s purchase of Twitter/X “to amplify his views and those with whom he agrees. This is his right. But there may well be costs for SpaceX.”Question genius, if Musk had not purchased Twitter, what would have happened to free speech, lawfare and democracy in America (think Supreme court stuffing, Constitution, illegal voters, open borders, etc. etc.)? While Musk is most responsible for the achievement at SpaceX, the foundation on which the company (and Western civilization) stands on is fast crumpling. It’s like dreaming of a beach side property while bleeding on the battlefield.

  3. A book reader

    I couldn’t put it down
This book starts out at the beginning of the Falcon 9 era and doesn’t let go. I felt like I was standing right beside the engineers from SpaceX when they were at their lowest moments and reached their highest highs.

  4. David Rubli

    Excellent Book
I love how Eric wrote the book, it’s really enjoyable reading. Even if I agree with the thinking behind the conclusions, I’m detracting a whole star just for using the word far right in connection with Twitter, this unreflected injection is not worthy of a journalist of his caliber. Other than that I’m a Berger fan and he deserves the praise!

  5. Luis Daniel Gomez

    amazing
Great story . Elon Musk is a person we have to support . He is truly a genius. Great book.

  6. j krauss

    Great read!
More episodic than “Liftoff”. Feels like a series of medium-to-long articles about how SpaceX achieved certain technical/operational milestones. Very enjoyable!

  7. the rob

Highly accessible review of SpaceX through ~2016
Space enthusiasts will enjoy this one, as will managers, executives and entrepreneurs looking for leadership lessons and insight into what made the earlier years of SpaceX tick.

  8. Anonymous

    Highly enjoyable
I remember liking Liftoff, but I’m enjoying this book even more. Incredibly easy to read, I went through half in a day.My favorite book of the year.

  9. Thomas E. Wheeler

a superb look inside the company that is changing the world
An inside history by one of the most skilled writers in America. It reveals not only the role of Elon Musk but also the roles of the major players that accomplished the impossible. I love Eric Berger’s books. He has an ability to look at the human side of great technical accomplishments. I hope he continues to write the history of SpaceX .
