As Grimm and his team race to identify the victim, uncover the motive behind their murder, and locate the missing owner and his employees, another body linked to the case turns up in Scotland, stretching his resources thin.
With a murder investigation pulled across two countries, and a rising body count, can he outsmart a killer and turn their deadly scheme to ashes?

David Gatwood makes the characters come alive.Harry and the team are all so very likeable that you want to learn more about them all. The stories are well planned out with twists and turns to keep you guessing until the ultimate climax.I recommend the book, in fact the whole series to all crime thriller readers

This is a fantastic series and each book keeps getting better. This was fast paced with plenty of action which kept the pages turning. There was also warmth and humour. With each book we learn a little more about the characters and see them evolve. The ending left me wanting more. Highly recommend.

Thank you for another adrenaline filled adventure. In the 18 books, I have enjoyed the characters as much as the story.

I’ve read all of this series of books and loved them all, the characters are alive, the scenery is bright, and the stories are exciting enough to keep me reading for hours at a time, loved the parts with characters from JD Kirks books too! Well worth a read if you like sweary Scottish detective stories!

Another great chapter in the transformation of Harry Grimm. The well crafted crime and its unraveling are only part of the story. The healing effect of “the shire”; delivered by the land and the people of the Dales are the enduring takeaways.

Teary-eyed at the end…
Whoa, what a great book with such a wonderful ending! Well, really there were two endings — and I loved the thrill & excitement of tying up the case so magnificently, as well as the passion & warmth of expanding the personal sides of things so beautifully.I can hardly wait until Harry is back in the next book!

Another Great Installment
The DCI Harry Grimm series is a favorite. The characters have become friends in this long series set in the Yorkshire Dales, an area the author obviously loves. In the last book, one of the important secondary characters died, one of his team has moved away, another team member needs to be more helpful with his family farm, and Harry has bought a house with his partner Grace. Upheaval all around and changes will result.A warehouse fire in which one person died and the owner can’t be located catches the team short-handed and with little to go on. A couple of twists that I didn’t see coming turns the climax into a confrontation that has Harry returning to his soldier personality in order to save three people and himself.DCI Jack Logan from JD Kirks series set in Scotland (another favorite author and series) makes a cameo and Steve the Lizard escapes. If you haven’t read David J. Gatward’s Harry Grimm series, start at the beginning because I’ve thoroughly enjoyed all of them.

closure and a good who did it
Well the closure is for a lost friend and Harry gets a figurative kick ⦠anticipatedThe mystery, though, was quite adept. Iâm left w the feeling that it was more violent than some but it wasnât. The motives are heartless and justice is served.

Another intriguing case for Harry and the team
In Ashes of Betrayal, Harry finally takes a few days off to get packed and move into his new house, but crime has other plans. Interesting plot and not an obvious whodunnit – it keeps you guessing. There are a few cameo appearances – a visit from Gordy which brings closure to her situation before she heads off to a series of her own. And some of Scotland’s Finest lend a hand in solving the mystery. No spoilers, but I love it when characters drop in from another author’s novel. David J. Gatward is truly a master at weaving so many threads together in every installment of the DCI Harry Grimm series. All the regular characters (to include Smudge, Fly and now Steve) have been lovingly developed over time so now we feel they are old friends. Descriptions of the gentle yet rugged beauty of the Yorkshire Dales as well as the village of Hawes leave many readers feeling like we’ve actually been visiting there once again. (Of course, we can not leave out the cheese and cake!)

Fire
Great lead in story sets the stage for crimes that are initially confusing and without clues. Coffee and money tip the scales to figuring it out. There are further crimes and odd characters to add interest. The final battle adds adrenaline, interest and closure to the story.

Another winner
The Harry Grimm novels are some of my favorite British mysteries, and this was one of the best. I would have given it five stars, except for one thing. Harry supposedly was a Para — a member of Britain’s Parachute Regiment, roughly the equivalent of our Army Rangers. He certainly would have known why a .22 makes an excellent assassin’s weapon — because it’s relatively quiet, there’s rarely an exit wound from a head shot, and the slug often bounces around inside the skull, making sure the bad guy is really dead. And he would have never been foolish enough to leave the guy with the battering ram, or the girl with the gun, alive behind him. A quick heel stomp to the larynx or the bridge of the nose would have been instincive. The idea he would have stopped to make sure a drug cartel assassin was “all right” is ridiculous. Other than that, absolutely top notch.

Reading Pleasure
This series just gets better and better. The plot is convoluted, entertaining and skilfully brought to a satisfying close. The characters continue to delight and growand although I am usually a fast reader, I was forced to slow down and enjoy the wonderful descriptive writing to ensure I didn’t miss any of the “scenery.”The send off for Anna was beautifully done.Looking forward to the next installment.
